Destination to... somewhere warmer than here ;)

If you were not aware, this winter has been brutal on the city of New York.  We have had multiple snow storms, wind storms, freezing rain/ice storms, and even at one point, a hurricane. To say the least, some of us have had enough; and I am one of them.

So, during this crazy time, I have decided to take the opportunity to go visit a friend who lives in a VERY warm environment. It is so warm there that right now they are in the season of summer. Where could this place be?? Well, I will tell you soon enough ;)

All I can say is that in the past, I was unable to go visit my friend Ferdnanda due to work. She always invited me to come in March because that is when she had time off from work. This year, an opportunity has opened up where I can come see her next month and I am super excited to not only get to see this beautiful country, but to also see a friend who I have not seen since 2008.

Now, as I am packing up and trying to figure out what to bring, I realize that I would really like to bring a gift that really represents American culture. So, I need your help. If you were visiting someone in another country who has never been to the states, specifically New York, what would be a great gift to bring? Remember, it has to go through security and go on the plane. Oh and please keep it clean & appropriate (what can I say; that is the teacher in me ;). And, if you are not an American, think, if someone from the US was visiting you, what would you want them to bring that you think represents, American culture?... Can't wait to hear what you guys come up with!!

Oh, and about the place that I am going... Guess that too ;)

  2. Well since I'm in Australia and we are currently in summer I'm going to guess..... AUSTRALIA!? Or maybe somewhere in South East Asia, 'cos I'm fairly certain they're in the same season pattern!
I've never been lucky enough to visit anywhere in America let alone New York so I can't really help on the gift suggestion front :(

  5. I've never been to the US so I'm not sure what would be representative of your country! But it feels pretty much like summer here in Bangladesh at the moment :) Hope you enjoy your visit wherever you're going!

  8. @ It must be fashion: I can imagine how cold it gets in Holland; I was there last summer and there were moments where it was a bit chilly.

@ Leia: Bangladesh would be a nice place to visit; maybe another time in the future ;)

    @ mac-and-me: You are getting warmer ;)

  10. Well since her name is Fernanda, I'm going to guess Spain, or somewhere else in the Spanish-speaking world.
As for a gift, that one is hard. I feel that every region of the US has a unique apects that makes up "American Culture."
For example, I'm from New Mexico and if I was giving someone a gift that represented my what I think of as American culture, it would have a southwestern theme. If I knew they liked to cook, I'd give them green chile or red chile powder. I also might bring a small piece of southwestern art or a book of photographs of places in New Mexico.
It's hard to think of just one thing that represents the US besides the flag or other patriotic items...

Feel lucky that it's been pretty warm here on the west coast. Though it would be nice to every once in a while get to wear a cute coat!!!

@ Semester in Spain: I COMPLETELY agree about how each region in the US has their own culture. I've got to brainstorm more about what would be a good NY thing to give.

@ GetSomeSwag: Hope you get to travel soon :)

  21. I'm going to guess Brazil...just cause you said Portugal was close and they speak Portuguese in Brazil. It is also summer there right now.

If I were to want something representative of NY, it would be something from Broadway. Are there small framed pictures or photo from one of your favorite plays or theatres. You could even do a framed photo of Times Square or the skyline. Something she could hang up or set out that just says NY by looking at it.

Can't wait to hear where you are going.

  31. Hmm what to bring? Some good treats from your favorite place.. Preferably something that won't melt. People have brought me coffee beans from their fave coffee shops before, but that's because I love coffee. What does she like?

  32. So you're off to Brazil! That should be a great adventure. As for a gift, I don't really know - perhaps a small American flag? I know it sounds rather lame!
