Drive this car; I dare you!

On Saturday, it had to be one of the coldest days in Manhattan. The wind tunnels down the avenues and streets were pure torture. So when my friends and I had to walk two blocks to Chelsea Market, we were struggling. Yet, one rule of thumb to live by in any big city is to keep yours eyes open because if you don't, you may miss something. And, we almost did.

A block away from Chelsea Market, one of my friends noticed a car parked on the street:

The car had graffiti all over it. But, that was not what really shocked us; look inside the car.

The vehicle was FILLED with newspapers all the way to the top. The question was: how did the owner drive it? The situation left us perplexed and we felt the need to take photos. A guy walking by stopped and told us that he knew the owner and that, "he is as crazy as the car." Before we could ask him how he drove it, he was gone...

The mystery has been left unsolved...

  1. Hehe Richie knows the owner, he has several of these around Chelsea and is a hoarder!!! He lives in a trailer a couple of blocks from this car, equally filled with newspapers,he sleeps in a little corner on top of them!
    Case solved Señorita,,,,

  2. LOL... But, how does he switch the car from one side of the street to the other. What about alternate sides??

  3. Ok according to Richie he brings a cart in which he carefully empties out his papers and switches the car, then puts all the papers back in the car. They recently towed one of his cars and he wept in the streets for hours!! Those papers are all very precious to him, every single one.

  5. Quite unbelievable this car! For sure the owner is a crazy guy..........can't imagine the amount of time it takes him to empty the car and then to put back the newspaper in it - Obviously it's his life.

  11. I've seen some similar cars in my time (usually in a Walmart parking lot, go figure.) but I have NEVER seen anything like this before. And to think he has more than one car similar to this one is sad and frightening at the same time. I agree with wanting to see him empty it out in order to move it. Will look forward to those pictures if you're able to snap them!

  12. @ anni: Yeah, we were pretty fascinated by it :)

@HH: I can actually see that happening a Walmart parking lot :) I would love to track this guy down and see him in action. I agree that it is pretty sad that this is how he spends his time, yet at the same time, it is typical NY. There is always someone crazier than the next :)

  22. Oh my god - I saw this car too! It was parked right by Chelsea Market when I was in New York for the IFB conference on the 10th. Haha - I just chalked it up to the fact that it's New York. So glad to have discovered your blog (though all the photos make me hungry)! Thanks so much for visiting mine. :)

  24. I think that the owner of the car is a pyschology professor at CUNY, a Prof. Itwillcomeinhandy Oneday, who's an expert in "Chronic saving". I think there was an article in the paper many editions ago - actually it's kind of yellowing on the stack of other papers on my dashboard,.. I mean, my desk....
