Spain: Where Footballers are made

To begin sharing my recent trip to Spain, I am going to start with a sport that is a national treasure in Spain and in many other countries: Football (also known as Soccer). The reason I am posting about football is because out of all of the many, many times that I have been to Spain, this was the first time that I personally saw the passion that so many talk about in Spain. My friend and her family are avid football fans. For me, it felt like the World Cup again. We watched matches on tv, (two of them being Madrid vs. Barcelona), went to watch a match between Tenerife & Valencia (Tenerife lost), and my favorite, watch my friend’s son play a match. Before my arrival, I would keep up to the date with the team's performance through their blog which is:

Now, to actually go and see the team in action and in person is a real treat for me :)

These are the pictures from their game.

For me, it was amazing to see these kids turn from little children into footballers...

And work so eloquently as a team.

Interestingly, the field that the children played on was right outside a major football stadium. Was this purposely done to encourage youngsters to play harder?

Honestly, I don't even think they noticed.

I really enjoyed watching these kids play with their whole hearts and with everything they had. Of course, I enjoy going to professional sporting events. Yet, their is something special about watching kids play their sport and do their craft well.

Are you a sports fan? What sport is big in your family or among your friends?

  26. You were in Spain in April-May? Those were the crazy Madrid - Barça weeks!!! Four (or five? I forget) face-offs in just one month... It was "el partido del siglo" every week! :p

I'm a football fan every two years (European Cup and World Cup, specially the later ESPAÑA CAMPEONES!!!), in between times I don't pay it too much attention. I'm a big fan of "la Selección" and I got the chance to see them play Scotland in the final qualifying match for the European Cup this past Oct in Alicante. The ambiance in the stadium was electrifying and the Scottish fans were a blast! They created quite sensation walking around Alicante all week in kilts. ;o)

But my favourite sport (to watch and sometimes play) would have to be tennis. This week has been really intense with the Davis Cup final against Argentina. Amazing matches for a Spanish victory. Viva RAFA!!! I got to see him play in Roland Garros 4 years ago, he's very intense!
